Nicola Conteras

Ceramics

With a Fashion Design and Textiles degree, Nicola worked for ten years in fashion design and colour forecasting which took her to India, the Far East and USA. Whilst living in New York she trained in ceramics and wheel throwing and on returning to London she started coiling. Her primitive organic work was first shown at The Dagmar Gallery in Dulwich. Her first translucent porcelain work at Gainsborough House, Suffolk, in 1991. She then exhibited at Chelsea Crafts Fair, Europe, USA and galleries around the UK.

She has since exhibited at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Bothy Gallery, Kenwood House London and Leeds City Art Gallery In 2016 she had her own ceramics showcase at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

“The vessel’s form emerges as it is coiled, it is carved to refine the shape and surface and colours are applied to the inside. As the porcelain shrinks and becomes translucent during firing the work is unpredictably affected and through the process of making, develops it’s own outer and inner character”.
